Inquiry-based programs meet standards across the curriculum by building observation skills and encouraging critical thinking. The museum’s renowned collection features work by American artists including three generations of the Wyeth family. Multi-disciplinary connections to art, language arts, social studies, environmental science and even math are possible; see specific program offerings below or contact the education office at 610.388.8382 or education@brandywine.org.

Program Themes

School Programs include a thematic guided tour and may be adapted to the curriculum and level of the group. Most programs are one hour, except as noted.

All Ages

Highlights Tour:   Discover landscape and still-life paintings, portraits, illustrations, and works by Wyeth family artists.
Three Generations of Wyeth Art:    Learn about a family's history in works of art created by three generations of Wyeths including N. C. Wyeth, his son Andrew Wyeth and grandson Jamie Wyeth.
Holiday Tour:    Offered from Thanksgiving through early January. Enjoy trees decorated with natural ornaments, model and toy trains, and special art exhibitions.

Young Children (pre-K through grade 2)

Museum Explorers:    45-minute tour that uses the five senses to explore art and the museum.
Read-Aloud Tour:    Hear tales related to works of art while exploring the museum. An optional hands-on art activity related to the theme of the story is available for an additional cost of $4 per student.

Grades 3 through 6

Storytelling in Art:    Use imagination and observation skills to discover stories contained in works of art.
Pennsylvania Art and History:    Examine work by Pennsylvania artists and discuss historical events, including the Battle of Brandywine.
Art and Geometry:    Explore how artists manipulate compositional elements, such as line, shape, color, balance, symmetry, and repetition, to create meaning in a work of art.
Art and Nature:    Two-hour program offered Tuesdays and Wednesdays in April and May. Investigate aspects of landscape art, animal and plant life, habitat and watershed inside and outside the museum.

Grades 6 through 12

The Art of Illustration:    Study the art of illustration in the work of Howard Pyle and his students, including N. C. Wyeth.
Media Study:    Examine art techniques and evaluate decisions made by artists in choosing materials and tools.
Creative Writing and Art:    Develop ideas for creative writing through art. After the tour, groups may stay in the galleries to complete writing exercises
Andrew Wyeth Studio Program:    Visit the studio where Andrew Wyeth created some of his most iconic works of art. Two-hour program include guided tours of museum and site with $8 additional cost per person. Offered weekdays, April through November, for 28 people maximum, including chaperones.
N. C. Wyeth Studio Program:    Visit the artist's house and studio and view works of art by three generations of Wyeth artists. Two-hour program include guided tours of museum and site with $8 additional cost per person. Offered weekdays, April through November, for 28 people maximum, including chaperones.
Kuerner Farm Program:    Explore Andrew Wyeth's creative process through a visit to this historic site painted by the artist. Two-hour program include guided tours of museum and site with $8 additional cost per person. Offered weekdays, April through November, for 28 people maximum, including chaperones.
