Native Plant Gardens Internship

The Brandywine Conservancy & Museum of Art announces the availability of an internship within its Native Plant Gardens program. The Native Plant Gardens Intern will assist the garden staff with all activities that occur in the gardens and meadows surrounding the Brandywine River Museum of Art and the Brandywine Conservancy headquarters on the Chadds Ford campus, including: planting and maintenance of the native plant gardens; invasive plant identification and management; collection, cleaning and sowing native plant seed; working the annual native plant sale (one weekend); tending to the plants in the nurseries, as well as other related projects. Applicants should have an academic background in plant or environmental science, ecology, land management, wildlife biology or a related field. They should be organized, self-motivated and able to work independently with little supervision, and have a positive, energetic attitude.


  • Assist garden staff with the full range of garden activities
  • Assist garden staff and volunteers with seed collection and cleaning
  • Work with and supervise garden volunteers
  • Perform assigned projects independently
  • Perform administrative tasks as assigned
  • Participate in department meetings

Minimum Requirements:

  • Interest in the native flora of the middle-Atlantic region
  • Ability to follow directions working as team as well as independently
  • Ability and willingness to perform manual labor, as needed
  • Ability to work outdoors in variable weather conditions, in varying terrain and vegetation
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Access to a reliable personal vehicle required

The internship will last approximately ten weeks, starting in the spring, and will be compensated at the rate of $15 an hour.  Housing is not available.
