Preventative Technician for the Historic Properties, Part-time

Head of Collections and Senior Registrar

The Preventative Technician maintains the public sections of the museum’s three historic buildings with daily/weekly/annual tasks that ensure the professional presentation of the sites and the preservation of the collections

Reports to the Senior Registrar and works with the preparators, registrars, curators, Facilities and Security staff.  


  1. For an average of 20 hours per week, performs daily, weekly, and monthly tasks to ensure that the collections at the Historic Properties are clean, organized, and ready for public viewing.
  2. Becomes familiar with the objects on view at the Properties and their conditions in order to recognize any change in condition.
  3. Assists with environmental monitoring of Historic Properties.
  4. Under the guidance of registrars and preparators, assists with object installations/deinstallations at the Historic Properties. 
  5. Assists in periodic inventories of Historic Properties collections.
  6. Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Head of Collections and Senior Registrar.


  1. The successful candidate is a detail-oriented individual that can work independently while managing multiple tasks and demands. 
  2. Experience with handling objects and preventative conservation. 
  3. Knowledge of museum standards regarding collections care, including integrated pest management and environmental monitoring.
  4. Flexible work schedule to accommodate public tours at the Historic Properties.
  5. Physical strength necessary to lift and/or move heavy objects (able to lift and carry 30 lbs., e.g., work of art), and climb ladders 
  6. Current driver’s license and available transportation for travel to and from historic sites. 

$18 per hour
