Historic & Scenic Resource Protection

Protecting historic and scenic landscapes preserves character and culture for future generations.

Our Brandywine Valley is characterized by exceptional natural areas as well as working landscapes and historic architecture. Its historic resources include: 18th and 19th century farmsteads with stone barns and colonial homes; historic industrial mills, hamlets and villages; Native American settlement sites; and landmarks from the Revolutionary War, the Underground Railroad, and the Brandywine School of Art.

  • To protect these resources, we provide historic preservation planning through historic landscapes analyses, resource assessments, impact analyses, development review, National Register nomination preparation, conservation easement evaluation, and regulatory planning and amendments.
  • We also conduct scenic resource inventories, develop maps, and improve local ordinances to protect scenic resources.
