POSITION SUMMARY:
Brandywine Conservancy & Museum of Art is seeking seasonal, part-time Skating Guards to support our holiday ice-skating program at the temporary outdoor skating rink located in the Museum Courtyard. Skating Guards are responsible for helping provide a safe, welcoming, and enjoyable experience for visitors using the rink, including monitoring rink activity, assisting guests, enforcing rink rules, and managing skate rentals.

No previous rink experience is required; training will be provided. Candidates should be dependable, professional, comfortable interacting with the public, and able to skate confidently. Availability for a combination of days, evenings, weekends, and holidays during the December 18 through January 18 operating period may be required. Actual work hours will vary based on the rink schedule and staffing needs.

STARTING RATE: $14.00 per hour

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide excellent customer service and create a welcoming experience for Brandywine visitors.
  • Greet and assist guests entering and using the skating rink.
  • Respond courteously to guest questions and provide information about rink procedures and rules.
  • Verify guest admission to the rink as directed.
  • Manage the skate rental area, including distributing and collecting rental skates and assisting guests with appropriate skate sizing.
  • Organize and return skates to the appropriate storage racks and maintain a clean and orderly rental area.
  • Perform routine upkeep of rental skates, including disinfecting skates between uses and identifying skates requiring maintenance or removal from service.
  • Remain visible and attentive while monitoring activity on the rink.
  • Monitor ice surface and perform routine maintenance, including using a hand-held ice resurfacer, clearing ice shavings, and ensuring a safe skating surface.
  • Help ensure guests are skating safely and following established rink rules and procedures.
  • Clearly and courteously communicate rink rules to guests and intervene when unsafe behavior is observed.
  • Assist guests who need help while on or around the rink.
  • Promptly report injuries, incidents, unsafe conditions, or rule violations in accordance with Brandywine procedures.
  • Assist with maintaining a safe, clean, and orderly rink, skate rental area, and surrounding Courtyard.
  • Maintain fire pits with wood when needed.
  • Assist with other rink-related and guest-service duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be at least 17 years of age.
  • Must be able to ice skate proficiently, confidently and safely.
  • Reliable and punctual, with a professional and courteous demeanor.
  • Strong customer-service and interpersonal skills.
  • Comfortable interacting with visitors of different ages and skating abilities.
  • Able to follow and consistently enforce safety procedures and rink rules.
  • Able to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Available to work a flexible seasonal schedule that may include days, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Previous customer service, recreation, skating, or other public-facing experience is helpful but not required.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to skate and remain active for extended periods during a shift.
  • Prolonged periods of standing and walking throughout the assigned area.
  • Ability to lift up to 15 pounds.
  • Ability to work outdoors in winter weather and varying temperatures and conditions.
  • Ability to perform duties safely in and around an active skating rink.
