DIY Fairy House

Celebrate International Fairy Day on June 24 by creating your very own fairy house using materials you can gather from your own backyard and neighborhood.

Since we spent the spring tidying up our gardens, it’s now time to attract and welcome the fairies to our yards. Although the Brandywine's annual Fairy House workshop will not take place in-person this year, you can still build your own amazing, magical abode that the garden fairies would be happy to call home for the summer!

Gather Your Supplies:

Let your imagination guide you:

  • Sticks of varying types
  • Tree bark
  • Small stones or rocks
  • Moss
  • Pinecones and pine needles
  • Feathers
  • Freshly picked flowers, leaves & ferns
  • No glue is required, unless you would like a more secure structure

Step 1:

Find the perfect spot! Look for a niche in the base of a tree or rock wall just off the busy path. Fairies like the quiet.

Step 2:

Frame out the basic structure of the house by leaning sticks and bark to create the sides and roof of the house. You may need to use small stones or rocks to help keep the sticks from shifting.

Step 3:

Add moss to the roof and in front of the entrance.

Step 4:

Adorn the house with the flowers, leaves, ferns—any natural materials you have gathered! Break apart smaller pieces of bark or pinecones to create the steps leading into the house.

Step 6:

When your house is complete, take a picture and post it to social media—tag us on Facebook and Instagram! We'd love to see all the enchanting new fairy houses that have been created.
