In 2014, the Brandywine received a bequest of a superb group of American paintings from longtime trustee Richard M. Scaife. This generous gift added depth to the Brandywine’s collection of Hudson River School artists, while introducing new artists, including Martin Johnson Heade, Lilly Martin Spencer, Ernest Lawson and Willard Metcalf. In addition, Mr. Scaife gifted Penguin Court, his estate in Western Pennsylvania, to the Conservancy, adding over 1000 acres to the Brandywine’s protected lands—the single largest land acquisition in the organization’s history.
