By Design: Setting the Stage

Join us online for a conversation with Joshua Lane, the Lois F. and Henry S. McNeil Curator of Furniture at Winterthur Museum, Garden, & Library, about some of the furniture pieces in Betsy Wyeth’s collection.

The talk will center on Betsy’s keen eye for antique furniture alongside her historic vernacular architecture projects. A few of the pieces on display in the exhibition include her walnut highback chairs, line and berry spice cabinet, and mahogany two-corner cupboard, all from the 18th–19th centuries. Betsy favored rustic furniture with designs that offered simple, readable, graphic shapes and silhouettes, as viewed from across a room. This design process helped set the stage for some of Andrew’s future paintings.

Speaker Bio:

Joshua Lane received his B.A. in American Studies from Amherst College and his M.Phil. from Yale. He worked at the Connecticut Historical Society and the Stamford Historical Society before moving to Historic Deerfield, where he has curated the furniture collection since 2000. In addition, Lane served as the Director of the Summer Fellowship Program at Historic Deerfield between 2005 and 2012 and then joined Winterthur as the Lois F. and Henry S. McNeil Curator of Furniture.
