Opening Day of "Rooted" and Book Signing with Caldecott Winner Sophie Blackall
Celebrate the opening of Rooted: Family and Nature in Contemporary Children’s Book Illustration with a special book signing at 2 p.m. with Sophie Blackall, a two-time Caldecott award-winning author and illustrator, who is featured in this exhibition. Books will be available for purchase in the Museum Shop.
Prior to the book signing, meet-and-greet with the co-curators of Rooted—Audrey Lewis and Shadra Strickland—who will be available inside of the gallery from 12:30–1:30 p.m. No advance registration is needed for the book signing, which is included with Museum admission.
Sophie Blackall is a two-time Caldecott award-winning author and illustrator of over 50 books for children.
In Farmhouse, Blackall tells a story based on a real-life family who long ago occupied a farmhouse and dairy farm in the Catskills of New York. Using hand-collaged elements—such as printed wallpaper, old photographs, and remnants of clothes that Blackall salvaged after she purchased the property—she imagines their daily lives in exquisite detail.
