Ralston Crawford: A Conversation

Ralston Crawford: A Conversation

Discover Brandywine’s newest exhibition, Ralston Crawford: Air + Space + War, in this online program featuring Emily Schuchardt Navratil, curator of the Vilcek Foundation, in conversation with the artist’s son, John Crawford, and moderated by Brandywine curator Amanda C. Burdan. The discussion will explore the dramatic impact of aviation on the evolution of Crawford’s art—from his personal experiences in flight to his exposure to the construction of airplanes and the destruction they wrought in the war. He served in the Weather Division of the Army Air Force, creating a new visual language in maps and charts, and continued working as an artist through the war—receiving a commission to paint the Curtiss-Wright Aircraft Plant in Buffalo, New York, and an assignment from Fortune magazine to observe and record the atomic bomb Test Able at Bikini Atoll.
