Reopening the Brandywine

We are excited to welcome you back!

The Museum reopened on July 1, 2020:
Wednesday–Monday, 10 a.m.–4 p.m. (closed Tuesdays).

To ensure the safety, security and quality of the visitor experience, the Brandywine will be implementing a variety of new procedures when it reopens, including face mask requirements, timed ticketing and capacity limits. Advance reservations are highly recommended. Visiting the Museum FAQs

When will the Brandywine River Museum of Art reopen?

The Brandywine will reopen to visitors on July 1, 2020 for members and advanced ticket purchasers.

What will be the Brandywine’s hours of operation?

Once the Museum reopens, our regular hours of operation will resume. The Museum will be open Wednesday–Monday, 10 a.m.–4 p.m. Closed Tuesdays.

What is the cost of admission?

For non-members tickets can be purchased in advance for the following prices:

  • $18 adults
  • $15 seniors (65+)
  • $6 students with ID and children ages 6-18
  • Free for children ages five and under and members of the Brandywine Conservancy & Museum of Art

What is the Brandywine doing to keep visitors, volunteers and staff safe?

Following guidelines set by the CDC and WHO, the Brandywine will be implementing a variety of safety protocols including:

  • Requirement of face masks that cover both the mouth and nose for all staff and visitors (over the age of two)
  • Capacity limits in the Museum galleries to enforce social distancing
  • Timed ticketing to limit the number of visitors in the building
  • Online ticket purchasing in advance of visit
  • Temperature checks for staff at the beginning of each shift
  • Enhanced cleaning routines and hand sanitizer stations throughout the Museum.
  • Collecting information in case of need for contact tracing
  • One-way entry for stairs and no more than one family at a time in elevators
  • Temporary closure of artist studio properties; no guided tours will be offered at this time

Do I need to wear a face mask during my visit?

Yes, all visitors (over the age of two) and staff will be required to wear a face mask covering their mouth and nose during visits, even if they are wearing a face shield.

I have medical condition and cannot wear a face mask. Can I still visit?

Face masks will be required for all visitors over the age of two. For your safety and the safety of our visitors and staff, we recommend that those who are unable to wear a mask due to medical conditions do not visit the Museum at this time.

What if I arrive at the Museum and realize I forgot my face mask at home?

Non-surgical face masks will be available for visitors if needed. Please see a visitor services team member upon arrival for assistance. A small selection of decorative cloth face masks featuring works of art from the Brandywine’s collection will also be available for sale in the Museum Shop.

Will you be taking my temperatures when I arrive to the Museum?

No. At this time, only Brandywine staff will be required to have their temperature checked before each shift. While Museum visitors will not have their temperatures checked, all visitors are instructed to stay home if they have an elevated body temperature, are feeling unwell or have symptoms of COVID-19.

Do I need to buy my tickets in advance?

The Brandywine will be implementing capacity limits and timed ticketing, and recommends tickets be purchased in advance online or over the phone. Click here to learn more about our timed ticketing procedures.

Can I still purchase a ticket in-person at the Brandywine?

Yes, however the Brandywine will be implementing capacity limits and timed ticketing, so we recommend all tickets be purchased in advance in order to ensure that tickets are still available prior to your arrival and to limit person-to-person contact. I’m a member. Do I need to reserve tickets in advance?

No. Brandywine members do not need to reserve tickets in advance. Members may continue to visit when they would like. Please have your membership card ready to check in at the Admissions Desk.

I have a complimentary pass. Do I need to reserve tickets in advance?

Those with valid complimentary or pre-paid passes to the Brandywine do not need to reserve a timed ticket prior to arrival. Please show your passes to the Visitor Services staff upon entry.  Your name, email address and phone number will be required for entry.
Please note: Entry to the Museum is always subject to building capacity. If the Museum is at or nearing capacity, you will be asked to wait until the Museum has room to accommodate new visitors.

I am a member of the North American Reciprocal Museum (NARM). Do I need to reserve tickets in advance?

Those with NARM memberships do not need to reserve a timed ticket prior to arrival. Please show your membership card to the Visitor Services staff upon entry.  Your name, email address and phone number will be required for entry.
Please note: Entry to the Museum is always subject to building capacity. If the Museum is at or nearing capacity, you will be asked to wait until the Museum has room to accommodate new visitors.

Is there a time limit to my visit?

No. While the Brandywine is moving to timed tickets to stagger the entry of visitors, there is not a time limit in place for the duration of your visit. Guests may stay for as long as they like until the Museum closes for the day.

If I arrive after my scheduled entry time, can I still enter the Museum?

Yes, we understand that things do not always go as planned. While we ask that you do your best to arrive at the Museum for your scheduled ticket time, we will still allow ticket holders to enter if they arrive late. The time on your ticket helps our Visitor Services and Security teams to maintain a safe hourly visitor count. Please note, if the Museum is at capacity, ticket holders—regardless of the time on their pass—may be asked to wait until the Museum has room to accommodate new visitors.

Will the artist studio tours be open?

No. At this time, the artist studios will remain closed. We plan to reopen them in April 2021.

What special exhibitions will be on view?

When will in-person programs and events resume?

At this time, in-person programs and events are paused. The Brandywine will continue to offer engaging virtual programs, which can be found at www.brandywine.org/events

Will the Museum Shop be open?

Yes, the Museum Shop will be open. We also will be offering curbside pickup options for those who are not comfortable shopping in person. Please call 610.388.8326 for details. Our online shop remains open.

Is the Millstone Café open?

Yes, the Millstone Café will remain open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. for “Grab and Go” options only. Limited indoor café seating will be available at this time. Outdoor seating will be available in the Museum’s courtyard.

Is seating still available inside the Museum’s galleries and atrium?

Yes, limited and spaced out seating areas will be available throughout the Museum and cleaned frequently. Additional outdoor seating will be available in the Museum courtyard for enjoying food from the Millstone Café.           

Do I need to give my personal information to the Brandywine?

In order to facilitate contact tracing, the Brandywine will be collecting your name and either a phone number or email address.
