Exploring the Brandywine Creek Greenway with Your Four-Legged Friend

Looking to get outside with your pets this fall? Whether you’re going for your morning walk, a weekend trip out of the city, or just passing through, you can find dog-friendly parks and trails through the Brandywine Creek Greenway App. By utilizing your phones global positioning system (GPS), this app provides nearby recreational areas from the over 200 parks and trails in its database, in both English or Spanish. You can even filter your search to look for specific amenities, such as bicycle trails or picnic facilities. Each description contains information about the park, including additional weblinks, parking notes and tips—including whether the location is dog-friendly, for leashed-dogs, or features off-leash dog parks.
Here are a few of our favorite parks in the area to make the most of the season with your four-legged friend:
- Stroud Preserve in East Bradford Township (on-leash)
- Shaw’s Bridge Park in East Bradford Township (on-leash)
- Barkingfield Park in Kennett Township (on-leash and off-leash fenced dog park)
- Anson B. Nixon Park in Kennett Township (on-leash and two off-leash fenced dog parks),
- Rockford Park in Wilmington, Delaware (off-leash unfenced dog park)
- Alapocas State Park in Wilmington, Delaware (on-leash)

Safety First
As dog owners, their safety is paramount, only second to our own. As their handlers, we are responsible for keeping them under control, ensuring the safety of other people, other dogs, and wildlife while enjoying our time outside with our canine companions.
Dog owners in Pennsylvania should also be aware of the recent passing of House Bill 1431, which permits the Pennsylvania Game Commission to offer Sunday hunting in Pennsylvania on additional dates from September through December, in addition to other permitted season dates for specific game. For the 2025/36 season, within State Parks in Pennsylvania, Sunday hunting is only permitted on November 16, 23, and 30. As we enjoy access to public open space, please note the upcoming fall and winter hunting season and the new changes in the state policy that may require a little extra planning before you head out, with or without your furry friend.
If venturing on to land that allows hunting, be sure to wear high-visibility clothing and equipment for both you and your pets! Bright orange is recommended above all other bright shades and colors. Finally, when enjoying any public space at any time of the year, please bag and remove all pet waste for the continued enjoyment of others and the health of our watershed.
