Trails & Tales – Restoring the Ecological Landscapes of Anson B. Nixon Park

Hear the tales behind the trails! Brandywine Conservancy staff alongside municipal and community partners is offering a seasonal series of walks to learn the behind-the-scenes actions involved in creating public outdoor community spaces. These leisurely walks held at sites throughout Chester County will highlight projects made possible through collaborative efforts and public support. 

Join Mark Volpe, Horticulturist and Park Manager for the Kennett Area Park Authority, for a guided walk through some of Anson B. Nixon Park's most ecologically significant landscapes. We'll explore what makes a healthy forest, examine the visible impacts left behind by the Emerald Ash Borer, and learn the stages, steps, and long-term processes involved in restoring a forest ecosystem. Along the way, we'll discuss how native tree plantings, invasive species removal, deer management, and riparian buffer restoration are helping shape the next generation of forest. Along the way, we'll visit areas that still reflect characteristics of the region's pre-colonial forests and learn why protecting streamside habitats is critical to the health of both the forest and the watershed. This walk will highlight how support from Brandywine Conservancy has helped make these restoration efforts possible. Participants should be able to walk up to 1 mile on unpaved and uneven surfaces at a leisurely pace.
