Virtual Event: Native Plants are for the Birds

Penguin Court wraps up "The Winged World Around Us" virtual series with a program by Patricia Barber, an Endangered Bird Specialist with the Pennsylvania Game Commission, who will be speaking about native plants.

You might be wondering why a bird specialist is focusing on native plants, since ornithologists are taught that birds choose plant structure over species, and while there is substantial evidence to back that up, that doesn't mean that plant species don't matter or that structure is the most important criteria to sustain ecological relationships, including diverse bird communities.

This discussion will explain the benefits of "going native", show ways native plants support the larger ecological community, and, most importantly, explain why native plants matter to birds.  You will gain a basic understanding of what you can do to support birds through native plantings in your own yard and neighborhood as well as where to look for help and resources.
