Archives and Special Collections

A book case filled with cardboard boxes, papers and research books.

The Research Center contains a variety of archival and special collection materials. Special Collections includes items such as rare and special edition books, portfolios and scrapbooks, films and video tapes, sound cassettes and vinyl records, historic calendars and posters, exhibition ephemera, photographs, and archival materials pertaining to various artists within Brandywine collections. Collection highlights include the Charles Scribner’s Sons Art Department Card File Collection, regarding the illustrations commissioned by the publisher over many decades, and the Paul Preston Davis Collection, which consists of the research materials accumulated by Davis for his book Howard Pyle: His Life – His Work, a compilation of all known Howard Pyle artwork and illustrations.
