The flowers are blooming, birds are chirping, and the days are getting longer—all signs that spring is finally here! It is also migrating season for hummingbirds which means it’s the perfect time to install a hummingbird feeder in your yard. Create your own DIY feeder by following the simple steps below. Then, fill with nectar, hang outside, and get ready to watch these beautiful, magical birds as they visit your garden this spring!

Gather your supplies:
Small jelly jar with lid band (4 oz. is perfect)
One piece of thin red plastic (a red plastic folder works great)
Twine or cording
Assorted beads (make sure twine fits through holes)
Permanent marker
Scissors
Ruler
Hole Punch

Step 1:
Draw a circle on the piece of plastic by tracing the top of the lid band with a permanent marker, then cut the circle.

Step 2:
Punch holes into the plastic and place in lid band. Set aside until ready to assemble.
Pro tip for kids: This might require a little extra muscle, so feel free to ask a grown-up for help!

Step 3:
Using a ruler, measure and cut twine—one 20” piece and three 12” pieces.

Step 4:
Wrap the 20” piece of twice around the top of the jar and secure with a knot. Then, secure the 12” pieces to the one you just wrapped around the top of the jar. (Note: The 20” piece should sit just under the lip and not on the ribbing. This will help ensure you are able to securely attach when assembling.).

Step 5:
String the beads (making sure you leave room at the top so you are able to tie a knot).
This is definitely not a necessary step, but the beads do make the feeders look extra colorful and special. Who knows, maybe they’ll attract more hummingbirds!

Step 6:
Secure lid to jar and tie three pieces of twine into a tight knot. Your feeder is now ready for the nectar! Follow the recipe below to make your own nectar at home.
Brandywine Conservancy Nectar Recipe:
In a thoroughly cleaned container, mix ¼ cup of granulated white sugar into 1 cup of water (1:4 ratio). Ensure the sugar is completely dissolved before putting it into feeder (there is no need to boil the water). For the health and safety of the hummingbirds, never add food coloring, honey or any other type of sugars or artificial sweeteners. Always use granulated white sugar and water. Replace nectar if it becomes cloudy, as hummingbirds prefer fresh nectar.
