Salt Dough House Ornaments

Use supplies you already have in your pantry to create these adorable house ornaments to always remember this unique time. Add things like the date, the names of people in the house with you, or even a child’s handprint to make these ornaments extra special.

Supplies: 

  • 1 cup flour 
  • ½ cup salt 
  • ½ cup warm water 
  • Mixing bowl 
  • Spoon 
  • Butter knife 
  • Rolling pin 
  • Baking tray 
  • Cooling rack 
  • Spatula 

Optional supplies: 

  • Straw 
  • Ribbon 
  • Paint 
  • Paintbrush 
  • Magnets 
  • Glue  
  • Skewer  

*Pre-heat your oven to 200 degrees F

Step 1:

Mix all the dry ingredients.

Step 2:

Add water to dry ingredients and mix and knead until dough forms. (If the dough is too crumbly, add warm water a little at a time; if the dough sticks to your hands, add more flour.)

Step 3:

Dust your rolling surface with flour.

Step 4:

Roll out dough until it is about ¼ inch thick.

Step 5:

Use a butter knife to cut out a house shape. Keep doing this until you use all the dough, or use the extra dough to make other cutouts.

Step 6:

Use a straw to poke a hole in the top of the house to make it into an ornament. You can also use things like the butter knife or a skewer to add details. An easy design to make is to use your thumbs to press a heart into the soft dough.

Step 7: 

Carefully use a spatula to lift your creations onto a baking sheet.

Step 8:

Bake in the oven for 1.5–2 hours at 200 degrees.

Let your salt dough creations cool on a cooling rack.

Step 10:

Once dry, string ribbon through the hole of the house, paint the houses and/or glue magnets to the back.
