The World of the Wyeths: The Brinton's Mill Experience

The Brandywine Museum of Art will soon be offering exclusive guided tours of Brinton’s Mill, the former Chadds Ford, PA residence of Betsy and Andrew Wyeth for more than four decades, which was transformed by Betsy’s subtle design.

A group of old stone buildings sits in an open grassy field under a bright blue sky with a few scattered clouds. The largest structure has thick stone walls and a steep roof, while a smaller barn and another house stand nearby, giving the scene a quiet, historic countryside feel.

For the first time ever, this private landscape will be open for limited tours in conjunction with Brandywine’s upcoming exhibition By Design: The Worlds of Betsy James Wyeth, and in collaboration with the Wyeth Foundation for American Art—which owns the property.

This exclusive experience will first take visitors on a trip to the Andrew Wyeth Studio, a National Historic Landmark, for a guided look at the couple’s first family home and Betsy’s design elements within. Continuing on to the nearby Brinton's Mill by shuttle, visitors will then walk through grassy landscaped grounds around the site to view the exteriors of the complex, including the historic milling building, its mill race and the house—both extensively transformed by Betsy to suit her design principles and in hopes of providing a productive working environment for her husband. The visit culminates with a visit inside the ground floor of the restored Granary building—the Wyeths’ first residence on the property and later used as a studio—where the experience centers on the building itself through its preserved historic features and architectural elements added by Betsy to support creative and functional needs through her carefully considered design.

In addition to these guided tours, Brandywine is also working on offering a variety of workshops with opportunities to paint and photograph the landscape of Brinton’s Mill, which inspired Andrew Wyeth for more than four decades resulting in hundreds of works of art. This debut of a new historic environment of the Chadds Ford region is expected to develop in future years with trails, integrating it into regional networks through the efforts of the Brandywine Conservancy.
